As controversial as it’s been, safety pins became a symbol of standing against racism, sexism, genderism. To me it means taking a strong stance that all beings are sacred and it’s a symbol of safe space.

Rainbow Bead Pin
I have heard that most recently the safety pin was used in Brexit as it was an easy way for people to identify themselves as being against racism. In the US, it became adopted after our presidential election. Hate has no place in our country. This means many things, and the safety pin is not the only thing we need to do, but to me is definitely is one thing we can do to overtly say we believe in and protect people of persuasions. To me and others this extends beyond humans but to Mother Earth herself.
And so I painted a watercolor of a pin with rainbow beads, in part as recognition to the far too frequently targeted-community of LGBQT, but also reflecting the unity within diversity that is needed in these times, and the prophesy of the rainbow of all races coming together in defending life itself. The rainbow also shows in heavy polarity of dark and light, rainbow emerges. Bang!  The rainbow to me represents the sacred third emerging out of duality.
Red Heart Safety Pinrainbow-heartWhile creating mine, I saw on facebook a friend had a safety pin created by the talented Baltimore cartoonist Gary Huck. It’s truly brilliant representation of what is needed; and from a graphic design perspective just pretty damn perfect. Simple and elegant and meaningful. I wrote to him asking if I could print his at no profit, and he agreed the next day to send me the files! Upon a request, we asked if he would show it as a rainbow heart as well as a red one. And then my facebook friend Martha McCamy coincidentally posted she was looking to have some pins made on her stream, and so reached out to her.
